A building's first day is the easiest one. The materials matter most on day 3,650 — the day the render begins to hairline crack, the day the timber greys in patches, the day the roof drips ochre onto the driveway.

We favour materials that get better through that. Not because they're rustic, but because they let us stop pretending the weather won't happen.
