The Workshop keeps almost everything worth keeping. The sawtooth roof, the salt-glazed brick, the timber king-post trusses — all retained and made honest again. What's new sits lightly on top: a copper-clad addition set back from every street frontage so the original silhouette carries.
The ground plane is given back to the city. A generous laneway runs the full block, activated by three small hospitality tenancies and a public artwork commissioned in partnership with the University of Newcastle.
Twenty-four one- and two-bedroom lofts sit above. Ceilings are high, plans are square, and every apartment reads at least two aspects.
